Celebrating another summer school in Freetown

The last day of our 2017 Summer School in Sierra Leone. Tears were shed, plenty of thanks were given, and many selfies were taken.

Our team in Freetown

It has been an incredible two weeks and Yanoh summed it up best:

Today was the final day of our program. We started the day with sorting out the certificates, and then finding a space for our closing ceremony. We then met with the vice chancellor and the chair of another department who seemed eager to be involved next year. Joanne, Charlie, and I then led the final Model UN session which was quite successful and exciting. I was really proud of all the students, they were so passionate and eloquent. They will all make great world leaders. As we gave out certificates the students cheered each other on, affectionately calling each other by their model UN countries (“Go China!”).

Almost all the students came up to me and shook my hand and thanked me for the opportunity. We ended the day with a bunch of selfies with the students, and one final lunch at the canteen. I felt sad knowing I wouldn’t be working with these exceptional students anymore, but excited about what the future holds for them. I hope as a PROWIBO professor I can receive updates from the students regarding their academic and professional career. As I mentioned in my application, Sierra Leone holds a place dear in my heart, I couldn’t imagine partaking in this opportunity anywhere else.

A thank you to Fourah Bay College for hosting us and to the amazing students who participated in our program. We wish them best of luck in their future endeavors and available to assist them. We will be returning next year and hope the students will drop by and say hello!

Gifts from our students

We look forward to returning in 2018! Meanwhile, join us on Facebook with the Professors Without Borders Sierra Leone Alumni group where we will continue posting updates and opportunities for students.
